3. Understanding Soul, Body, and Will.

The soul and living body form a unified psycho-physical individual, where every psychic experience interacts with bodily processes. Mental feelings can appear independent but arise in concrete, body-bound contexts. Feelings naturally demand expression through bodily movements, actions, or reflection, while the will directs action using psycho-physical mechanisms. Experiences of pleasure, pain, or effort reveal the interplay of capacities, causality, and expression. Volition exercises mastery over the living body, yet its creative power transcends simple cause-and-effect, forming the essence of human agency.

Soul and Living Body

The soul exists in direct relation to the living body. Psychic experiences rely on somatic influences, creating a unity called the psycho-physical individual. Sensations and perceptions are body-bound, while mental acts alone can occur independently. Physical reactions, like increased heartbeat from joy or alarm, illustrate this psycho-physical causality. The soul’s capacities, such as observation or enjoyment, develop through experience and practice, while overexposure may lead to fatigue or boredom.

Mental Feelings and Pure Experience

Mental feelings appear as independent psychic events, but they often coincide with bodily responses. Pure mind experiences pleasure or pain without physical accompaniment. Yet, in real life, feelings trigger measurable bodily effects: palpitations, flushed cheeks, or breathlessness. These occurrences illustrate how the psychic and body interact. Observing this interplay reveals capacities of the soul and how physical and mental states influence one another, emphasizing the psycho-physical unity in human experience.

Expression of Feelings

Feelings naturally seek expression. Emotions such as joy, anger, or shame manifest through facial expressions, gestures, or imaginative acts. This outward release transforms internal states into observable phenomena. The form of expression can vary: controlled, aesthetic, or reflective. Reflection does not weaken a feeling but channels it differently. Expression shows the intensity and meaning of feelings rather than simply representing them. Through expression, psychic energy translates into visible action or perception.

Will and Volitional Action

Will governs actions and coordinates with the living body. Decisions translate into movements, overcoming resistance or fatigue. For instance, climbing a mountain requires the will to guide each step through psycho-physical mechanisms. Will interacts with causal conditions but also introduces creativity, generating actions that are not predetermined. Striving differs from willing because it lacks full conscious initiative. The willing "I" masters the living body while shaping reality in ways beyond automatic cause-and-effect.

Interplay of Feeling, Expression, and Will

Feelings, expression, and volition are intertwined, forming the fabric of human experience. Feelings drive expression, actions embody will, and bodily reactions reflect inner states. Expression externalizes inner life, while will shapes both mental and physical outcomes. Psycho-physical causality underlies these processes, yet the soul retains the capacity for creativity, choice, and reflection. Understanding this unity clarifies the profound connection between mind, body, and the living, acting individual.
