1. Development of the "I":

Edith Stein explores the psycho-physical individual by tracing the development of the "I" through self-awareness, streams of consciousness, and the substantial soul. The "I" first reveals itself as self-ness in contrast to others, then as a unified stream of experiences marked by qualitative content. The soul emerges as the enduring core of the psyche, carrying attributes like disposition, energy, and volition. Together, self-ness, qualitative variation, and the soul form a structured unity integrating consciousness with lived experience.

Understanding the Pure "I"

The "I" begins as a pure, featureless subject of experience. It becomes aware of itself through contrast with others, recognizing "you" as another "I." This sense of selfness underlies all personal experiences and the feeling of ownership over them. Self-awareness grows as the "I" relates to other consciousnesses, forming the foundation for individuality.

The Stream of Consciousness

Our consciousness flows in a continuous stream of experiences. Each experience is connected to previous ones, giving the "I" unity over time. These streams differ in content, making every individual's consciousness unique. Selfness combined with qualitative differences shapes individuality, moving toward a fully realized psycho-physical identity.

The Soul

The soul forms the lasting core of the psyche. It expresses traits like willpower, energy, and feelings, and persists across experiences. Its structure depends on and shapes the content of consciousness, linking the individual "I" to personal and external influences. The soul unites psychological and physical aspects, creating a complete, enduring individual.sential to define the individual. An individual is a conscious entity shaped by pure, immanently given experiences, forming a stable centre in which all phenomena appear. Understanding this lays the groundwork for analysing empathy accurately.
